Agitator technology in biogas plants
Agitator technology plays a central role in the efficient operation of biogas plants. In these plants, biomass such as liquid manure, plant residues or biowaste is converted into biogas in a fermenter through microbial decomposition. The main task of the agitator is to mix the substrates in the fermenter evenly to ensure maximum efficiency of the decomposition process. Other objectives are to avoid floating layers that could hinder gas transportation and to support gas exchange between the liquid and the gas space.
INCREASED YIELD
Advantages
- One of the most important advantages is the increase in biogas yield. Continuous mixing ensures that all available organic substrates are broken down efficiently.
- The risk of the formation of floating layers or sediments that could block the digester is significantly reduced.
- Another advantage is the improvement in process stability, as uniform mixing compensates for fluctuations in the substrate or gas flow.
Energy Consumption
Challenges
- One of the biggest challenges is energy consumption. Agitators have to be operated continuously, which accounts for a significant proportion of the total energy consumed by the plant. To overcome this challenge, MUT-Tschamber has developed energy-efficient agitators that enable optimal mixing with minimal energy consumption: sustainable agitators.
- Another challenge is the wear of agitator parts due to the abrasive properties of some substrates. This can lead to frequent maintenance work and the associated costs. However, modern agitators are designed to be particularly durable and wear parts can be easily replaced. In addition, the efficiency of the agitator can be monitored and optimized through the use of sensors and automated control systems. MUT-Tschamber's buzzword here is digital twin.
